We are delighted to offer this lovely 250 SL that has been in the same hands since a whopping 43 years! It was bought by the present owner at 3 years old and with 15 000 miles on the clock. It followed the couple when they moved in France and they obviously converted it to European headlights and put it on a French registration.
The odometer currently reads 56564 miles (invoices show it's got 156 564k miles).
The black soft top is very recent and has no creases or marks, the inside of the top is also very clean.
The chrome elements scattered around the cabin are blemish and scratch free, only the door sill strips are a little dented and warped in some places as they often are. The wood trim on the dashboard has no cracks and is in great shape. The seats do not buckle under your weight and the MB Tex upholstery is not ripped and shows limited wear for its age. The hind part of the seats are in good condition, the “carpet-like” covering is as-new. The doorcards are also in great condition. This model is equipped with the optional headrests.
All gauges are functional (bar oil pressure one) and all are backlit properly when you activate the headlights. The heater appears to be working properly and all levers slide properly and are not cracked; this is important as the dashboard of a Pagoda does not come apart and makes these very difficult to change.
Since receiving the car we have carried out a full engine rebuild with new Mercedes Pistons and bearings. We have also reconditioned the power steering pump. Whilst the engine was out the engine bay was also repainted with a new firewall pad.
The car is also have a new set of carpets fitted. The carpets are OE quality with the twin loop from Germany.
Step out of the car and have a good look at the bodywork and you will find it very hard to fault. This car has always been garaged and it shows. The chrome has only minor wear and is really beautiful, be it on the front or rear bumpers, light surrounds etc. The paintwork is lovely and we will know shortly whether it has been repainted or not. In any case, the hue is homogenous throughout the panels which are all straight and dent-free. No ripples in the aluminium doors and hood or in any of the wings, no traces of accidents or previous repairs. There is only one small bubble in the passenger side front wing, the only trace of rust we have found on the whole car, simply remarkable!
Mechanically this car starts very well and idles perfectly; it does not stall when cold and does not smoke at all. The engine bay is clean and is that of an unmolested SL. The engine was rebuilt in 1999 at 124 000 miles (30 000miles ago) with a top and bottom end rebuild. The engine is the correct one and has good power while the 4 speed automatic transmission shifts fine and engages properly. The test drive was very satisfactory and reflects the last French contrôle technique which hardly had any advisories. One regarded the fuel tank which has since been replaced. The rear calipers are new, flex hoses all around and the rear shocks are new as well.
Inspection on the ramp revealed very sound underpinnings. They do not show traces of damage or signs of leakage; they are solid and straight throughout although a small rust patch of 2 in x 2 in has been found at the base of the throttle pedal.
This lovely 250SL is priced to sell and you will be hard-pressed to find another combination of price/history/condition. It has been maintained regardless of cost and pretty much always at Mercedes Mainagents or specialists. You are welcome to inspect it. old British plates, fully stamped service book until 1982 and all French invoices from 1986.
